Expected value

If we were to look back on a years poker play, amongst a group of a dozen or more average poker players we would find a similar set of statistics in terms of hands that have produced a profit or a positive EV. Small differences will exist between players and between say 6 handed EV's and 10 handed EV's. In general we can use this useful information to determine the potential value of our holes cards. AA for instance has an EV of around plus 2.50 and pocket 2's an EV of minus 0.10. So in simple terms if you invest £100.00 in AA you can expect a return of £250.00. Invest the same amount in 22 and you will lose £10. So it would be fair to conclude from this we should raise with our AA and invest heavily in the hand and we should not play 22 unless we are in the big blind in an unraised pot. It's a simplistic look at card values that just provides us with a useful guide. Use this as a guide only. In 6 handed poker you must play a wide range of hands even those considered to have a negative EV. Why would you do this? if you learn how to play skilled poker post flop, you can make a handsome return even on negative EV hands.
